To ensure that evidences generated through implementation research are truly translated into action; investments are required to be made to develop competencies for bridging the research, policy and practice worlds. Being an implementation research project, one of the prime focuses of the USAID’s RDM, is to strengthen local capacity to conduct implementation research and expand evidence-based practices. To that end, RDM is employing several mechanisms that spans from introducing special short courses for health policy-makers/program managers to enhance their capacity on implementation research to nurturing junior researchers through Fellow program to develop their scientific understanding of implementation research and its implementation.

RDM is working to design and develop a special short course on implementation research for government health policy makers/managers/NGO program implementers to enhance their capacity in generating evidence through implementation research and taking evidence based decisions.

Using the platform of the existing research fellow/trainee program of icddr,b, RDM has set to develop the capacity of young researchers with a special focus on implementation research and delivery science. Research fellows/trainees under this program are enrolled for a two-year period and tagged with different study teams which help them gain both theoretical learning and hands on experience on conducting implementation research.

As part of building local capacity, RDM carries out training and workshops on implementation research and data interpretation for government officials, icddr,b researchers and USAID’s implementing partners in health.

This activity identified potential gaps in capacity and practices in conducting implementation research and generate evidence in the selected health departments and institutes of the Government of Bangladesh.

This initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of junior researchers at icddr,b, as well as health professionals from medical colleges, universities, and research institutes—particularly Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka Medical College (DMC), Dhaka Shishu Hospital, Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital, and BIRDEM—in public health research and data interpretation.

As part of this effort, STAT Readers Forums are organized for junior health professionals at icddr,b, focusing on epidemiology, biostatistics, and data science. In collaboration with BSMMU, another component of the initiative supports future health professionals in developing skills in data analysis and thesis writing. The fellowship program under RDM provides the opportunity of building the research capacity of young professionals at icddr,b.

RDM conducted 86 training sessions, reaching 2,378 professionals with short courses on implementation research, basic training on epidemiological and statistical methods, and data analysis, and thesis writing for the health professionals. Of the eight fellows supported under the program, seven successfully continued their career progression in research-related fields, while one discontinued.
